Walmart plans to roll out digital shelf labels across all stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of the year while ruling out individualized dynamic pricing.
Walmart Inc. plans to complete the installation of digital shelf labels across all of its namesake U.S. stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of the year, while explicitly rejecting the use of personalized dynamic pricing technology.
John Furner, chief executive officer of Walmart U.S., stated that the retailer will not utilize artificial intelligence or customer data to adjust prices for individual shoppers. The commitment ensures that pricing will remain uniform across customer demographics, regardless of personal income, purchase history, or shopping habits.
The transition to digital shelf labels replaces traditional paper tags, allowing store employees to update prices electronically across thousands of items in a matter of minutes. Executive leadership emphasized that while the technology streamlines operational efficiency and inventory management, it will not be used to implement surge pricing or real-time personal cost adjustments.
The rollout covers thousands of retail locations nationwide, marking one of the largest deployments of electronic shelf label technology in the U.S. retail sector. The system enables faster price changes, reduced labor costs associated with manual tagging, and improved order fulfillment accuracy for online pickup and delivery operations.
Retailers across the nation have faced increasing scrutiny from consumer advocates and lawmakers over potential algorithmic pricing practices. By ruling out individual-level price adjustments, Walmart aims to clarify its strategy as it modernizes its physical store infrastructure.
