BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Coalition for Smart Construction at Virginia Tech is developing a digital commons platform aimed at expanding industry access and collaboration for smaller building contractors. The initiative intends to create an interactive online network where smaller market participants can share operational strategies, discuss regulatory challenges, and access research resources.

Andrew McCoy, interim managing director of the coalition, stated that the organization is prioritizing greater representation for independent and small-scale builders. The upcoming platform is structured to function similarly to online forum communities, allowing users to submit topics, engage in discussion threads, and share relevant construction insights.

Small- and mid-sized construction firms often face barriers in adopting advanced building technologies and navigating supply chain complexities compared to larger commercial developers. The proposed digital commons aims to address those barriers by facilitating peer-to-peer communication and establishing links to academic research.

Industry estimates show that smaller residential and commercial contractors represent a significant portion of the total building sector, yet they frequently operate with limited resources for specialized technology integration. The digital initiative seeks to bridge this operational gap across the industry.
