Villa Vie Residences Halts Residential Cruise Operations as Bankruptcy Looms
Residential cruise provider Villa Vie Residences has ordered passengers off its global vessel in Cambodia while considering bankruptcy following severe financial losses.
Residential cruise operator Villa Vie Residences has halted operations of its continuous world cruise ship, the Odyssey, stranding passengers in Cambodia after ordering them to evacuate the vessel on short notice. Company Executive Chairman Mikael Petterson confirmed the operator is considering bankruptcy protection after critical funding negotiations collapsed.
The business model offered buyers permanent cabins ranging from $119,999 to $439,999 for continuous global travel. However, management cited a sharp surge in marine fuel costs tied to the ongoing armed conflict in Iran as the primary catalyst that triggered a severe cash flow shortfall, disrupting plans to reach financial break-even by 2026.
The current shutdown follows a series of operational and financial difficulties since the project's inception. Retrofitting the three-decade-old vessel delayed its initial departure from Belfast by four months in 2024 due to unexpected mechanical repairs, including work on the ship's rudder, which incurred $15 million in cost overruns.
Following its belated launch, the venture confronted passenger dissatisfaction regarding living quarters and amenities, leading to multiple ongoing lawsuits. As residents began leaving the ship and requesting refunds, the company unsuccessfully sought emergency capital to stabilize its balance sheet.
Management stated that attempts to secure an emergency investment failed earlier this month, leaving the company without operational funds to maintain the 509-cabin ship or support remaining residents onboard.
