Ukraine Executes Rare Battlefield Casualty Evacuations Using Heavy Drones
Ukrainian military forces have successfully completed aerial evacuations of wounded soldiers using specialized heavy hexacopters equipped with stretcher capsules.
Ukrainian forces recently executed two combat medical evacuations using a specialized heavy aerial drone, marking a rare deployment of unmanned aircraft for battlefield casualty extraction. The operations carried out this month successfully transported wounded infantrymen out of hostile zones where traditional ground rescue methods were deemed impossible.
The evacuations utilized the StarGate, a specialized six-rotor aircraft developed by Ukrainian defense firm SkyFall. Built specifically for casualty transport, the heavy hexacopter features an enclosed stretcher capsule mounted beneath the airframe. An operator from Ukraine's 475th Separate Assault Regiment piloted the aircraft during both missions.
During one mission, an injured soldier identified by the call sign Izyum was extracted after suffering severe leg injuries from an explosion. With opposing Russian forces advancing and hazardous terrain preventing vehicle or infantry access, the hexacopter landed within ten meters of the wounded soldier's position to complete the extraction.
Military personnel view aerial casualty evacuation as a critical capability when intense enemy surveillance, artillery fire, or impassable terrain block both human medical teams and ground-based robotic units. Heavy combat risks along the front line have increasingly driven military leadership to test unmanned platforms for emergency medical logistics.
While aerial evacuations remain a high-risk measure of last resort, recent operations demonstrate the expanding role of specialized unmanned systems to retrieve casualties under extreme battlefield constraints.
