Construction contractors have initiated work on major U.S. Coast Guard infrastructure projects in Alaska and Rhode Island totaling $586 million.
Construction firms Perini Management Services and Skanska have begun work on two U.S. Coast Guard infrastructure projects with a combined value of $586 million, federal contracting records show. The separate developments involve extensive facility overhauls at installations located in Alaska and Rhode Island.
Perini Management Services Inc., a unit of Framingham, Massachusetts-based Tutor Perini Corporation, has initiated site work at Coast Guard Base Kodiak in Alaska. The contract focuses on critical infrastructure improvements, utility modernizations, and facility upgrades designed to support active air and sea operational capabilities across the northern Pacific region.
Meanwhile, global construction group Skanska has started work on replacing the Coast Guard's homeport pier facility in Newport, Rhode Island. The project entails the complete demolition of the existing aging pier infrastructure and the construction of a modern maritime pier equipped with upgraded shore-power services and berth capacity.
The newly designed Newport pier is engineered to support the Coast Guard’s incoming fleet of offshore patrol cutters. Project plans call for reinforced marine foundations, enhanced bulkheads, and heavy-duty utility integration tailored to long-term operational resilience along the North Atlantic seaboard.
Both defense contracts are being executed under multi-year timelines. Construction teams at both Kodiak and Newport are coordinating work sequences with military command personnel to maintain continuous operational readiness and vessel maneuvering during the construction phases.
