CoStar Expands Data Portfolio With 730 Million Dollar Vexcel Acquisition

According to The Real Deal, CoStar Group is acquiring aerial imaging provider Vexcel for $730 million. The deal, expected to close in early 2025, follows a series of high-profile acquisitions intended to bolster the firm’s proprietary real estate databases and compete across residential and commercial sectors despite recent fluctuations in stock performance.

CoStar Expands Data Portfolio With 730 Million Dollar Vexcel Acquisition

    Context from Industry Pulse

CoStar is aggressively pivoting toward a total-market data dominance strategy, spending over $3.1 billion on Vexcel, Zonda, and Matterport in a single year. These acquisitions target specific data gaps: Matterport provides 3D interiors, Zonda offers lot-level builder data, and Vexcel adds high-frequency aerial imagery. However, this spending spree arrives as the company faces internal performance challenges. While total revenue grew, the sharp 50 percent drop in net new bookings suggests a potential slowdown in client acquisition or retention. This tension between massive capital expenditure and cooling sales metrics explains the recent double-digit stock decline and previous activist investor interest in the firm's residential strategy.

CoStar Group is continuing its aggressive expansion strategy through the acquisition of Vexcel, an aerial photography specialist that utilizes manned aircraft and proprietary technology. As The Real Deal reports, the deal is valued at $730 million and is scheduled for completion at the start of next year. Vexcel currently generates $140 million in annual revenue and maintains a portfolio of tens of millions of aerial images spanning dozens of countries. The firm will retain its own brand identity and existing leadership under Chief Executive Officer Erik Jorgensen.

This latest move serves to enhance the property database capabilities of CoStar by integrating advanced imagery and artificial intelligence tools. The Real Deal notes that the Vexcel purchase follows two other major acquisitions within the past year. In August, CoStar finalized an $815 million all-cash deal for Zonda, a data firm specializing in the homebuilder market and development activity. Earlier in February, the company also completed a $1.6 billion acquisition of Matterport, a leader in 3D imaging technology.

Despite these strategic additions, CoStar is facing scrutiny from the investment community. Third-quarter earnings results showed a 14 percent increase in revenue to $952 million, but other metrics indicated significant headwinds. As reported by The Real Deal, annualized net new bookings dropped by 50 percent compared to the previous year, falling to $37 million. Following the release of these figures, the company saw its stock price decline by as much as 13 percent during mid-week trading.

The firm has also dealt with external pressure regarding its residential marketplace, Homes.com. The Real Deal highlights that investment firm Third Point previously led an activist campaign urging CoStar to reduce spending on the platform due to ongoing losses. While Third Point eventually liquidated its position and ended the campaign, CoStar remains under pressure to prove that its high-cost acquisitions and residential investments can deliver sustainable value to shareholders in a shifting market.

    The Industry Pulse Bottom Line

CoStar is doubling down on proprietary data assets to insulate its market position. Success now depends on whether integrating these expensive technologies can reverse the current decline in new bookings and satisfy skeptical investors.
