A new labor tracking report highlights a growing gap between corporate executive compensation and average worker earnings across major public companies.
Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk received $158.3 billion in total compensation last year, creating an unprecedented disparity where his earnings reached more than 2.5 million times the median salary of the electric vehicle maker's workforce, according to a labor research report released this week.
The compensation package, calculated primarily from the grant-date fair value of awarded restricted stock, equates to Musk generating the $57,243 annual income of a median Tesla employee every 4.23 seconds. If the company hits all designated financial and operational milestones, the total potential value of the equity incentive could eventually expand to $1 trillion.
The figure sharply skews broader corporate compensation metrics. Musk’s total pay package was 14 times higher than the combined earnings of all other S&P 500 chief executive officers. Excluding Musk from corporate averages, median executive pay at S&P 500 firms increased 21 percent last year to reach $22.8 million.
By comparison, the typical S&P 500 chief executive earned approximately 312 times the median salary of their company's workforce. Other prominent leaders listed in the comparative data include Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook, who took home $74.6 million, and former Walmart Chief Executive Doug McMillon, who received $27.5 million in total compensation in his final fiscal year.
The widening divide comes as executive earnings outstrip broader national salary trends. Standard employment data indicates the average full-time American worker earns approximately $62,088 annually, an amount reached by top corporate executives within a single workday.
