Stripe Ends Acquisition Talks for PayPal Following Rejected $53 Billion Offer

Financial technology firm Stripe and its private equity partner have abandoned negotiations to acquire online payments giant PayPal.

Financial technology company Stripe Inc. and its private equity partner have officially terminated negotiations to acquire PayPal Holdings Inc., bringing an end to potential dealmaking that would have created an unprecedented industry consolidation. The decision to walk away marks the second time takeover discussions between the entities have collapsed without an agreement.

The decision to abandon the deal comes two weeks after the investment consortium revived discussions with PayPal leadership. Negotiations were restarted in an effort to reach mutually agreeable terms following PayPal's formal rejection of a previous takeover bid valued at $53 billion.

Had a transaction materialized, the purchase would have set a record as the largest acquisition ever executed within the global financial technology sector. Combining the two entities would have brought together Stripe's widely used payment infrastructure with PayPal's vast merchant network and global consumer digital wallet platforms.

Discussions reportedly foundered over differences regarding company valuation, regulatory hurdles, and governance structures for the proposed combined entity. Terms could not be finalized before the participating parties determined that continuing negotiations was no longer viable.

Representatives for both payment processors declined to provide further official statements on the collapse of the negotiations. Neither company has indicated any intention to resume discussions regarding a prospective merger or acquisition in the immediate future.
