Spellbook Names Meltem Kuran-Berkowitz as Chief Marketing Officer

The legal AI startup hires former Deel growth executive to drive expansion toward $100 million in revenue without using automated outreach.

Legal artificial intelligence startup Spellbook has named Meltem Kuran-Berkowitz as its chief marketing officer as the company accelerates its commercial expansion. Kuran-Berkowitz, who previously led growth at human resources platform Deel, joins full-time to lead marketing operations and help the firm reach $100 million in annual revenue.

The executive appointment follows a period of significant capital raising for the legal tech vendor, which specializes in automated contract drafting and analysis software. Spellbook recently raised $50 million in Series B funding at a $350 million valuation in a round led by Khosla Ventures, and secured a $40 million debt facility to fund potential acquisitions of competing generative AI software providers.

Under her leadership, the marketing strategy will focus on direct engagement with corporate legal departments and law firms while limiting the deployment of automated outreach. Kuran-Berkowitz stated that the company will refrain from using artificial intelligence to generate marketing emails or impersonate human interaction, opting instead for human-written messaging and targeted educational campaigns.

The company plans to focus its promotional efforts on specialized legal newsletters, closed industry communities, and practical professional programs rather than mainstream marketing tactics or celebrity sponsorships. Spellbook recently launched a $1 million fellowship fund designed to assist law students in streamlining legal workflows through technology.
