Construction crews have finished the eighth of 11 projects in a 13-year, $2 billion capital improvement program on a major New York City suspension bridge.
Construction crews have completed the eighth phase of an ongoing 13-year, $2 billion rehabilitation program on a major New York City bridge. The milestone marks a key advancement in the multi-stage infrastructure overhaul designed to restore and structurally reinforce the historic crossing.
The recently finished project centered on a $452 million contract executed by general contractor Skanska. The extensive scope of work encompassed the comprehensive replacement of all 592 vertical suspender ropes, which hold the bridge deck in place.
In addition to the suspender rope replacement, the contract included the full rebuilding of a 1.5-mile pedestrian and bicycle pathway along the span. The reconstructed pathway provides upgraded surface conditions and enhanced safety barriers for non-motorized traffic.
The broader $2 billion capital initiative consists of 11 individual construction and maintenance packages aimed at extending the overall operational life of the structure. With eight of those projects now officially complete, crews will move forward with the final three phases of the program.
The remaining work packages under the comprehensive master plan will focus on ongoing deck repairs, critical structural steel restoration, and advanced protective coating applications to defend the infrastructure against environmental wear and daily traffic demands.
