Residential Cruise Line Halts Operations in Cambodia Over Surging Fuel Costs

Villa Vie Residences has suspended operations of its residential cruise ship in Cambodia and requested that passengers disembark, citing a steep surge in global fuel prices that rendered the continuous voyage unsustainable.

The operator reported that monthly fuel expenses per cabin escalated by up to 344 percent in parts of Asia, rising from an average of $1,800 to between $6,000 and $8,000. Company officials stated that initial cost-saving measures, such as reducing cruising speeds and extending port stays, failed to offset the significant operating losses triggered by international energy market disruptions.

The company sold long-term and permanent residencies aboard its 509-cabin vessel, the Villa Vie Odyssey, pitched as a continuous multi-year journey around the world. Ownership options ranged from $119,999 to $439,999 for permanent cabins, with five-year residencies offered starting at $59,999. The ship originally departed from Belfast in September 2024 following four months of initial operational delays.

Villa Vie Residences confirmed it is currently coordinating disembarkation procedures and temporary housing arrangements for affected residents in Cambodia. Management stated it will spend the next 60 days pursuing financial restructuring and recapitalization options, though company officials cautioned that no transaction has been finalized and no outcome is guaranteed.
