Reddit Tests AI Feature to Convert Text Threads into Short Videos

Reddit has launched an experiment that uses artificial intelligence to transform text-based user discussions into short-form videos with synthetic audio narration.

Reddit has initiated a limited product experiment using artificial intelligence technology to automatically convert traditional text posts and user comment threads into short-form audio and video clips. The feature uses synthetic voice narration to read aloud user-generated text content, offering an alternative visual and auditory format for browsing discussions on the platform.

Under the current pilot program, selected text discussions feature an embedded media player that displays the original text post alongside prominent responses from community members. The generated video highlights specific lines of text on the screen in real time as an artificial intelligence voice reads the dialogue, accompanied by a disclaimer label identifying the clip as a real conversation voiced by AI.

In one public demonstration of the technology, an eight-year-old archive post from a popular gaming forum containing more than 100 user responses was reformatted into a three-minute video summary. The automated system aggregated the author's initial query and subsequent user recommendations into a single video file displayed above the standard comment interface.

The test comes as digital media platforms increasingly experiment with generative artificial intelligence to alter how user content is packaged and consumed. Reddit has not disclosed how many active forums are included in the initial test phase, nor has the company announced a timeline for a potential platform-wide release of the automated video generation tools.
