Qualcomm's new audio platform incorporates micro-power Wi-Fi 6E directly into its primary processor for extended range and lossless streaming.

SAN DIEGO — Qualcomm announced the launch of its Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 audio platform, marking the company’s first single-chip audio solution to feature integrated micro-power Wi-Fi 6E technology. The architecture is designed for next-generation wireless earbuds, headphones, and smart audio glasses.

By embedding Wi-Fi capability directly onto the main system processor, the new chip allows personal audio devices to connect directly to local wireless networks and internet cloud sources. This connection enables continuous, high-bitrate lossless audio streaming without requiring a constant direct Bluetooth tether to a paired mobile device.

Under previous wireless audio configurations, including earlier platform architectures, manufacturers were required to utilize two separate integrated circuits to handle combined Bluetooth and Wi-Fi functions. Combining these components into a single die reduces internal spatial requirements and power draw for wearable hardware manufacturers.

The integration of Wi-Fi 6E expands coverage across residential and office environments, maintaining connection stability when users move away from their primary audio source. The technology relies on specialized low-power modes to preserve battery life while transmitting higher-bandwidth audio signals.

Hardware vendors are expected to begin sampling the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 platform for upcoming consumer device releases later this year.
