A survey of major brand executives reveals that fragmented metrics and cluttered ad environments are slowing the pace of podcast advertising investment.

Podcast Ad Growth Slows as Marketers Cite Measurement and Quality Concerns

Major advertisers are tempering their growth expectations for podcast advertising budgets as persistent audience measurement challenges and declining ad execution quality create friction for marketing executives.

Measurement gaps have emerged as the primary obstacle for large-budget brands. According to a recent industry survey of media buyers representing up to $500 million in audio ad spend, 57 percent of respondents indicated that tracking limitations hold back their podcasting investments. For brands with annual media budgets exceeding $100 million, 90 percent cited measurement as a top operational concern.

Disparate audience metrics across streaming platforms, distribution feeds, and video channels continue to complicate attribution. Marketers currently rely on an inconsistent mix of promo codes, digital pixels, and media mix modeling to evaluate campaign performance, leading 40 percent of surveyed executives to report that competing channels offer a higher return on investment.

Consequently, overall expansion in podcast ad spending is projected to decelerate. While 59 percent of surveyed brands expanded their audio budgets this year, only 40 percent expect to increase spending through 2027. Industry spending forecasts project U.S. podcast ad revenue growth to moderate to 10.4 percent next year, down from 16.8 percent in 2026.

In addition to analytical barriers, over 40 percent of marketers cited poor ad environment quality as a deterrent. Concerns over rising ad volume, repetitive spots, and uninspiring host reads are prompting buyers to reconsider traditional audio placements in favor of broader, multi-platform creator partnerships.
