Sustainable materials enterprise PlantSwitch is expanding its manufacturing operations to produce one billion units annually of its plant-based plastic alternative. The scale-up centers on the company’s proprietary polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) resin, designed to replace conventional single-use plastics across multiple commercial sectors.

The biopolymer material is formulated to break down through natural organic processes in soil and marine environments without requiring specialized industrial composting infrastructure. The breakdown process yields no toxic microplastics or harmful chemical residues, offering a direct substitute for petroleum-derived resins.

A core technical advancement enabling the expansion is the resin’s full compatibility with existing industrial machinery. Plastic converters and manufacturers can process the PHA material using standard injection molding and extrusion equipment without incurring capital expenditure for factory retrofits or hardware overhauls.

Industrial scaling toward the one-billion-unit target comes amid rising market demand from consumer packaging producers, food service operators, and retail brands facing stricter regulatory limits on single-use polymers. Several municipalities and state authorities have enacted bans on traditional plastic items in recent years.

PlantSwitch plans to allocate the increased output toward high-volume packaging applications, cutlery, and straw production.
