Paris Business Owners Assess Damage Following Widespread Weekend Riots and Looting

Cost-of-living protests in the French capital escalated into violence, causing millions of dollars in commercial damage and prompting hundreds of arrests.

PARIS — Business owners and local authorities across Paris assessed extensive property damage on Sunday after weekend cost-of-living demonstrations escalated into violent riots and widespread commercial looting.

Demonstrators clashed with law enforcement personnel throughout Saturday and Sunday, setting fires to vehicles and street infrastructure while ransacking retail establishments. Heavy damage was reported in several prominent areas, including the Marais shopping district and the neighborhood surrounding the Place de la République, where police deployed tear gas to disperse crowds.

Distressed shopkeepers returned to clear debris from shattered storefronts and pillaged stockrooms. Targeted businesses ranged from small independent vendors—including boutique clothing shops, gold buyers, and specialty wine stores—to major supermarket chains, electronics retailers, and local bars.

Alexandre Bompard, chief executive officer of the Carrefour Group, stated that repair costs for the supermarket chain's damaged locations would exceed $11 million. Bompard warned that the physical destruction would carry significant economic consequences, forcing independent franchise partners to reduce operating hours and staff shifts.

Police executed hundreds of arrests over the weekend as security forces attempted to restore order. Despite ongoing cleanup efforts by city crews and volunteers on Sunday morning, fresh violence erupted by Sunday evening as black-clad rioters erected flaming barricades in central thoroughfares.
