Former Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap is departing OpenAI to launch a new venture as the artificial intelligence firm prepares for a public offering.

Brad Lightcap, a longtime executive at OpenAI who previously served as chief operating officer and chief financial officer, announced Tuesday that he is departing the artificial intelligence company. Lightcap stated in a message to staff that he is stepping down after eight years to pursue a new project.

Lightcap joined the ChatGPT developer in 2018 and held multiple senior leadership roles. Most recently, he led a special projects team reporting to Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman, where he focused on expanding enterprise software sales through private equity partnerships after transitioning from his operational duties in April.

In a statement shared publicly, Lightcap described the decision as bittersweet and noted he would remain available to assist staff during a transition period over the coming weeks. He did not disclose specific details regarding his upcoming venture.

Lightcap’s resignation adds to a growing series of high-level personnel changes at the organization. Recent departures include former executive Fidji Simo, who transitioned to an advisory role, and head of safety systems Johannes Heidecke, who left the company in July, alongside key ethics and research leaders.

Prior to his tenure at OpenAI, Lightcap worked as an investor at Y Combinator, managed strategic finance at Dropbox, and served as an investment banking analyst at J.P. Morgan. His exit comes as OpenAI continues to adjust its corporate structure ahead of an anticipated initial public offering.
