Nolla Health Launches AI Acne Prescription Pilot in Utah

Healthcare startup Nolla Health has launched an artificial intelligence system in Utah that analyzes facial scans and issues acne prescriptions.

Healthcare technology startup Nolla Health announced Monday the launch of a pilot program in Utah that utilizes artificial intelligence to evaluate skin conditions and autonomously write prescriptions for acne treatment. The platform allows users to submit facial scans through a smartphone application, which the AI system analyzes for severity before generating a recommended medication regimen.

The service is deploying with a phased clinical oversight framework designed to decrease direct physician intervention over time. For the initial cohort of 100 patients, two licensed physicians are required to review and approve each AI-generated prescription before it is officially issued to the patient.

During the second phase of the rollout, covering up to 500 patients, the oversight protocol will shift, allowing physicians to review prescriptions retroactively after they have been issued. Following the completion of the 500-patient milestone, the platform will transition to a spot-check system where physicians evaluate a sample of at least 10 percent of all automated prescriptions.

Automated prescribing tools represent an emerging frontier in telehealth, aiming to streamline care for routine dermatological issues by reducing patient waiting times and administrative costs. Dermatological applications of artificial intelligence have increasingly expanded from preliminary image analysis to direct clinical decision-making.

Nolla Health's initial rollout in Utah will serve as a testing ground for the automated workflow as the company evaluates patient outcomes and software precision during the multi-stage pilot.
