Mondelez Sues Joyride Sweets Over Sour Patch Kids Packaging
Mondelez International has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against YouTuber-founded Joyride Sweets over gummy candy packaging and shape.

Mondelēz International has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against candy manufacturer Joyride Sweets, alleging that the start-up’s packaging and gummy designs copy those of Sour Patch Kids to confuse consumers. The suit contends that Joyride intentionally mirrored key branding elements to capitalize on the established popularity of the flagship sour candy brand.
According to court filings, Mondelēz points to similarities in the overall package design, color schemes, and the distinct human-shaped silhouette of the gummy candies. The global food giant claims these visual overlaps violate federal trademark laws and constitute unfair competition in the retail market.
Joyride Sweets, a venture backed by prominent online content creators, entered the market offering low-sugar alternatives to traditional confectionery products. The company’s sour candy line competes directly with legacy brands in the fast-growing health-conscious snack segment.
Intellectual property disputes in the food sector frequently center on whether product presentation creates a likelihood of consumer confusion. While individual elements such as bright color palettes or generic shapes are rarely protected in isolation, courts typically examine the total visual impact of the packaging.
Mondelēz is seeking preliminary and permanent injunctions to halt the distribution and sale of the contested Joyride products, alongside monetary damages. Joyride Sweets has not yet formally responded to the pending legal action.
