Milo's Tea Sets Family Governance Standards as Sales Pass $1 Billion

Milo's Tea CEO Tricia Wallwork has instituted strict succession rules requiring outside work experience for family members as the company reaches $1 billion in sales.
Milo's Tea has surpassed $1 billion in retail sales, marking a major financial milestone for the third-generation business as corporate leadership formalizes strict family governance and succession rules.
Chief Executive Officer and Board Chair Tricia Wallwork, who assumed leadership of the enterprise in 2012 when retail sales stood at approximately $30 million, has overseen a period of rapid national expansion. The beverage enterprise originally launched in 1946 as a single food stand serving steelworkers before transitioning into a specialized commercial tea bottling business under the management of Wallwork’s parents.
To preserve 100 percent family ownership while managing rapid operational scale, the board of directors has instituted structured succession policies. The governance framework permits next-generation family members to observe shareholder and board meetings only after meeting specific educational and attendance benchmarks designed to build financial literacy.
Under the newly established corporate hiring rules, relatives seeking employment with the firm are required to graduate from college and complete at least three years of continuous employment at an outside company. Job candidates must also achieve a promotion at an external firm before submitting an application for a position at the family business.
The institutionalized rules aim to separate ownership rights from operational leadership, ensuring that internal executive appointments remain strictly merit-based while maintaining long-term family control over corporate strategy.
