Midwestern Universities Launch San Francisco Innovation Hub for Startups

Eight Midwestern universities have established the Third Coast Foundry in California to connect regional founders with venture capital and technology sector partners.

SAN FRANCISCO — Eight Midwestern universities have officially opened an innovation center in San Francisco to provide regional entrepreneurs and researchers direct access to Silicon Valley venture capital, industry partners, and commercialization resources. The facility, known as the Third Coast Foundry, recently launched full operations following its initial opening in June.

The collaborative hub is designed to support university-affiliated startups, early-stage founders, and research initiatives originating from the participating Midwestern institutions. By establishing a permanent physical footprint in Northern California, the coalition aims to bridge the geographic gap between Midwestern technology talent and West Coast investment networks.

In addition to general startup incubation, the center places a strategic emphasis on emerging technology sectors, including quantum computing, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing. Program offerings at the facility include regular investor showcase events, founder mentorship pipelines, and flexible workspace accommodations for visiting academic personnel and corporate partners.

Coalition representatives noted that while Midwestern research institutions generate a substantial volume of scientific intellectual property, regional ventures frequently face capital constraints during early commercialization phases. The new facility seeks to accelerate technology transfer and corporate growth while encouraging companies to maintain their primary operations in the Midwest.

Operations at the Third Coast Foundry are backed by a joint funding commitment from the participating universities, alongside support from alumni networks and corporate sponsors. Administrative leaders expect to expand program offerings and announce additional industry partnerships later this year.
