Microsoft Removes Animated Mico Avatar From Copilot Voice Mode

Microsoft is transitioning its emotive yellow avatar from the Copilot chatbot to its Learn Live platform.

Microsoft has officially phased out Mico, the animated yellow avatar previously featured in the voice interface of its Copilot artificial intelligence chatbot, according to an updated company support document. The character is currently being reassigned to the software maker's Learn Live platform.

The technology giant indicated that the relocation will provide the avatar with a broader range of interactive scenarios and educational content to react to. Users accessing Copilot’s voice features will no longer see the animated visual companion during their audio interactions.

Mico was originally introduced to Copilot in October as part of an effort to give the conversational AI assistant a distinct visual identity. Designed with dynamic facial expressions and real-time animations, the character was programmed to respond visually to user speech and tone during active voice sessions.

The decision marks a swift pivot for Microsoft's artificial intelligence division, led by Microsoft AI Chief Executive Officer Mustafa Suleyman, who had previously promoted the companion as a central element for humanizing the chatbot experience.

Mico's removal from the primary chatbot interface adds the character to a long history of visual assistants that Microsoft has shifted or retired over the decades. The company previously phased out digital helpers including Clippy, Rover, and the Cortana digital assistant as its core user interface strategies evolved.
