Meta Platforms has introduced updated privacy safeguards for its AI smart glasses as event organizers move to ban the recording technology.
Meta Platforms has launched a public relations initiative and updated privacy controls for its artificial intelligence smart glasses following rising privacy concerns and restrictions imposed by public venues.
Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth and wearables vice president Alex Himel outlined technical safeguards designed to prevent covert recording. The smart eyewear features an integrated front-facing LED light that illuminates whenever photos or videos are being captured. Software updates will automatically disable recording capabilities if the indicator light is covered or deactivated.
Company officials stated that Meta has begun terminating accounts associated with individuals who misuse the hardware to harass others or record without consent. However, non-consensual footage captured via the devices has continued to surface across social media networks, fueling public pushback.
In response to safety concerns, major event organizers and public venues have enacted strict policies regarding smart eyewear. The DEF CON hacking conference banned smart glasses entirely, while nightlife venues such as New York City's Basement announced that patrons bringing the hardware risk permanent bans. Festival organizers for events like Burning Man have similarly updated rules to require explicit consent before filming attendees.
The push for stricter privacy protocols coincides with Meta's broader strategy to position smart glasses as a mainstream consumer accessory through extensive marketing initiatives and high-profile promotional partnerships.
