Meta Shifts AI Ad Liability to Advertisers Ahead of Terms Update
Updated advertising policies taking effect Nov. 20 place full legal responsibility for AI-generated ad content on businesses running campaigns.

Meta Platforms is updating its commercial terms to explicitly state that advertisers bear full legal responsibility for content produced or altered by the company's generative artificial intelligence tools. The revised policies are scheduled to take effect on Nov. 20.
Under the updated terms, businesses utilizing Meta's automated creative features—which automatically adjust images, expand backgrounds, and generate text variations for campaigns—must ensure all final outputs comply with applicable laws and third-party intellectual property rights. The platform will not accept liability for infringement, false advertising, or regulatory violations resulting from AI-generated ad components.
Marketing departments and digital ad agencies have begun auditing active campaigns ahead of the mid-November deadline. Media buyers are reviewing campaign settings within ad management dashboards to identify and evaluate automated enhancements that may have been enabled by default during ad creation.
The policy shift reflects a broader effort among major digital advertising platforms to limit legal risk as generative AI technology becomes deeply integrated into automated ad creation tools. While these feature sets aim to optimize campaign performance and lower production costs, they carry risks of producing inaccurate product claims or unintended copyright issues.
Advertisers who continue to run campaigns on the platform on or after Nov. 20 will automatically be bound by the updated terms. Legal experts advise commercial accounts to establish internal verification protocols for all AI-augmented creative assets prior to launching future promotions.
