ChatGPT Paid Traffic Underperforms Google Search in Early Ecommerce Conversion Data

New research from the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management and the Vienna University of Economics and Business indicates that ChatGPT ads generate significantly lower returns than Google Search. According to MarTech, paid visits from the AI platform earn just 89 cents per session, while Google Search drives an average of $2.45 per session.

ChatGPT Paid Traffic Underperforms Google Search in Early Ecommerce Conversion Data

    Context from Industry Pulse

The disparity between paid and organic AI traffic suggests that the current ad format, which uses a sponsored card below the AI’s response, may not capture the same user intent as the primary recommendation engine. While Adobe Analytics found that general AI-referred traffic produces 83 percent more revenue per visit than non-AI sources, the specific paid inventory on ChatGPT is struggling to replicate that success. OpenAI’s challenge lies in balancing monetization with user experience; increasing ad prominence could improve conversion rates but risks degrading the organic referral quality that currently drives higher engagement and session duration.

Evidence from a study of nearly 1,900 ecommerce sites shows a stark divide between established search platforms and emerging AI advertising. Researchers found that conversion rates for ChatGPT ads sat at a mere 0.37 percent, trailing far behind the 1.17 percent conversion rate seen in Google Search. The study further revealed that 82 percent of the 102 analyzed advertisers recorded zero purchases from their ChatGPT campaigns. As MarTech reports, researchers concluded that Google Search provides over six times the revenue for every advertising dollar spent at current market prices.

OpenAI faces significant financial hurdles in scaling its advertising business. Current estimates suggest the platform earns approximately $1 per free user annually from ads, while the operational cost to serve each free user is roughly $5. To achieve parity with the return on investment offered by paid search, analysts suggest that ChatGPT click costs would need to drop to around 26 cents. Currently, some high-profile accounts are paying as much as $1.72 per click, highlighting a gap between cost and value.

Despite the low conversion rates for paid placements, unpaid referrals from ChatGPT show much stronger performance. Before the introduction of ads, organic AI referrals converted at 2.21 percent. Interestingly, the rollout of advertising appeared to coincide with a decline in organic traffic. Data cited by MarTech suggests that ChatGPT sent between 6 percent and 8 percent fewer visitors to ecommerce sites after ads were launched, though the reasons for this drop remain unconfirmed.

OpenAI maintains aggressive growth projections, targeting $102 billion in ad revenue by 2030. While the company claims its ad business reached a $1 billion annualized run rate within 200 days of launch, these figures remain difficult to verify due to the company's private status. Furthermore, discrepancies in attribution and measurement persist as the system matures. While the advertiser base is expanding into software and financial services, the platform has yet to prove it can deliver the efficiency of traditional search.

    The Industry Pulse Bottom Line

OpenAI must significantly improve its ad targeting or lower click costs to compete with Google. While advertiser adoption is growing, current data shows the platform provides inferior returns compared to traditional search.
