Los Angeles County Seeks Unpaid Property Taxes on Private Jets

California tax officials are stepping up enforcement of a decades-old assessment law targeting non-resident private aircraft operators.

Los Angeles County tax officials are stepping up enforcement of a longstanding property tax regulation, seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid fees from high-profile private jet owners. The action follows an expanded effort by California authorities to collect personal property taxes on aircraft parked or stationed within state borders.

Under the state regulatory framework, private aircraft present in California for a specified number of days during the tax year are subject to local assessment, regardless of where the owner is officially domiciled. Local tax assessors determine valuations based on flight records, maintenance logs, and airport registration data.

Among those impacted by recent assessments is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who faces approximately $244,000 in back taxes and penalties related to a private jet stationed in the region. Several other prominent business executives and high-net-worth individuals have also received notices regarding unpaid aviation assessments.

Officials stated that while the tax statute has been on the books for decades, automated tracking technology and improved data sharing between aviation authorities and county assessors have made strict enforcement more feasible in recent years.

Tax revenue collected through the private aircraft assessment program is distributed to local government funds, public services, and regional infrastructure projects across Los Angeles County. Revenue department representatives noted that enforcement operations will continue across all commercial and general aviation facilities in the jurisdiction.
