Instagram to Penalize Unlabeled AI Profiles by Restricting Content Reach

Meta will restrict algorithmic recommendations for Instagram accounts featuring synthetic personas that fail to display a new mandatory label.

Meta social network Instagram has introduced strict enforcement rules requiring accounts driven by artificial intelligence to clearly disclose their synthetic nature. Under the updated policy, profiles featuring computer-generated personas must display a mandatory "AI-generated profile" label or face immediate reductions in platform distribution.

The move updates a previous voluntary setting that allowed users to select an "AI Creator" tag. Platform officials stated the revised phrasing is intended to eliminate confusion between human creators posting about technology topics and fully artificial personas designed to simulate real human behavior.

Under the new policy, accounts that fail to apply the required label will have their content excluded from Instagram's recommendation algorithms, including suggested posts and the Explore page. Meta confirmed it will proactively monitor the platform for unlabelled synthetic accounts masquerading as actual individuals.

The enforcement initiative focuses on a rising trend of realistic virtual influencers generated through advanced machine-learning tools. These automated profiles frequently post photos and videos modeled after human lifestyle influencers, often attracting followers without initial disclosure of their digital origin.

Content restrictions will remain in place until affected account owners apply the designated disclosure. Once the label is added, the account's eligibility for algorithmic recommendation feeds will be restored.
