HITT Breaks Ground on $500M Solid Rocket Motor Plant in Virginia

Construction has begun on a $500 million manufacturing facility in Hurt, Virginia, to produce solid rocket motors for major tactical missile defense programs.

General contractor HITT Contracting has broken ground on a $500 million solid rocket motor manufacturing facility in Hurt, Virginia, designated for aerospace supplier Avio USA. The specialized industrial complex will produce solid propellant motors to support vital defense programs across the United States.

Once operational, the Hurt manufacturing plant will supply critical propulsion components for tactical missile systems developed by major defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. The project is designed to significantly expand domestic production capacity for defense hardware amid rising strategic requirements.

The multi-building campus will feature advanced infrastructure for the safe processing, assembly, and testing of solid rocket motors and energetic materials. Construction plans call for specialized environmental controls, reinforced structures, and secure containment facilities required for military-grade propulsion manufacturing.

Initial site preparation and earthwork are currently underway in Pittsylvania County. HITT Contracting will manage the development through multiple phases, focusing first on core infrastructure, high-bay manufacturing areas, and dedicated storage utilities before moving to final equipment installation.

The $500 million capital investment is anticipated to create hundreds of technical, manufacturing, and engineering jobs in southern Virginia. Full operational capability and production schedules for the facility will be finalized as construction milestones are completed in the coming months.
