FBI Links $6.3 Billion Binance Crypto Theft to North Korea

Federal investigators have attributed a record $6.3 billion cryptocurrency theft from digital asset exchange Binance to state-sponsored cybercriminals operating on behalf of North Korea, law enforcement authorities announced.

The intrusion was carried out by a specialized cybercrime unit known to intelligence agencies as TraderTraitor, according to findings released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Investigators determined that the hackers gained initial entry into Binance's internal infrastructure by compromising a corporate engineer's laptop.

After securing access through the compromised device, the perpetrators executed a series of complex, unauthorized transactions late last week, siphoning billions of dollars in digital assets. The incident marks the largest single cyber theft in the history of the cryptocurrency industry.

Binance executives pledged that the exchange will fully reimburse all impacted users using company reserves. The organization stated that system vulnerabilities identified during the preliminary investigation have been patched, and heightened security protocols have been deployed across its global network.

Law enforcement agencies and blockchain analytics specialists are actively monitoring public ledgers to track the movement of the stolen funds. Federal officials indicated that sanctions enforcement units and international partners are working to block attempts by the hackers to launder the proceeds through secondary platforms.
