DOT Allocates $481 Million for Airport Infrastructure Upgrades

The Federal Aviation Administration is distributing 191 grants to fund airfield rehabilitation and safety projects nationwide.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated $481 million in federal grants to support critical infrastructure improvements and rehabilitation projects at airports across the United States.

Distributed through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grants program, the total package comprises 191 individual awards. The funding is intended to assist both large commercial airports and smaller regional general aviation facilities in maintaining safety standards and upgrading aging physical assets.

Specific projects slated for funding include the resurfacing and expansion of runways and taxiways, the installation of energy-efficient airfield lighting systems, and structural enhancements to existing passenger terminals. Several allocations will also enable airports to acquire advanced snow removal machinery and modern aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles to ensure year-round operational readiness.

The funding stems from ongoing federal infrastructure programs aimed at modernizing national transportation networks. Federal officials stated that these targeted investments are designed to boost airfield capacity, reduce flight disruptions, and strengthen long-term economic activity supported by regional aviation hubs.

Individual airport authorities will administer the grants and initiate contracting processes in the coming months. Construction schedules will vary by location, with major rehabilitation efforts expected to roll out in multi-year phases across participating facilities.
