Heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar has partnered with artificial intelligence startup FieldAI to integrate autonomous capabilities into its construction machinery.

Caterpillar Inc. has entered into a strategic agreement with FieldAI, a software startup specializing in robotics, to develop and deploy autonomous features across its heavy equipment lineup. The collaboration aims to integrate FieldAI's navigation and decision-making technologies into Caterpillar machinery for construction and industrial applications.

Under the terms of the agreement, Caterpillar will combine its manufacturing expertise and operational job-site data with FieldAI's software platform. The system is designed to allow off-highway vehicles to operate independently in complex, unstructured environments without relying heavily on continuous satellite signals or pre-mapped infrastructure.

The integration of autonomous software is intended to increase operational efficiency, address ongoing labor shortages in severe work conditions, and enhance safety across worksites. FieldAI's core technology focuses on real-time environmental perception, enabling machines to detect obstacles and adjust movement patterns dynamically.

Caterpillar has previously deployed driverless technologies within large-scale mining operations. This latest agreement expands the company's focus toward broader construction applications, where machinery must navigate more unpredictable terrain and rapidly changing project requirements.
