Burning Man 2026 Begins as Black Rock City Rises in Nevada Desert

Approximately 70,000 participants are assembling in the Black Rock Desert as the temporary metropolis takes shape for the annual gathering.

Tens of thousands of participants are gathering in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert as Black Rock City takes shape for the annual Burning Man event. Gates opened at midnight on Aug. 30, with roughly 70,000 attendees expected to navigate the remote playa roughly 80 miles north of Reno over the course of the week-long gathering.

Early arrivals spent the weekend erecting shade structures, setting up campsites, and assembling large-scale art installations across the semicircular, clock-face street layout. Long lines of vehicles queued across temporary desert lanes as event workers verified tickets and passes at the entrance gates.

At the center of the temporary metropolis stands the "Man," a human-shaped effigy erected atop the Cryptomeria pavilion, a 60-foot tree-inspired structure with spiral stairways. Other major installations include the 170-foot-wide Temple of the Moon sanctuary, a giant metal octopus, and a replica of a shattered Eiffel Tower.

The temporary infrastructure includes the Black Rock City Municipal Airport, an unpaved, 13-day aviation hub operated largely by volunteers to handle general aviation and charter flights from California and Reno. Center Camp, anchored by an acre-wide shade canopy, serves as the main civic space for gatherings and daily operations.

Survey crews began marking the street grid approximately one month before the gates opened to support participants hauling their own food, water, and shelter. Weather forecasts project temperatures around 80 degrees Fahrenheit early in the week, accompanied by gusty winds capable of creating severe dust storms.
