Medical technology startup BeSound has introduced a low-cost 3D ultrasound device to improve cancer detection in dense breast tissue where standard mammograms can fail.
Medical technology startup BeSound has introduced a $349 3D ultrasound screening system designed to detect breast cancer in patients with dense tissue, addressing a critical gap left by conventional diagnostic tools.
Standard mammograms frequently struggle to identify potential tumors in dense breast tissue because both dense tissue and cancerous lesions appear white on conventional X-ray images. This anatomical similarity can obscure early-stage abnormalities, leading to false-negative results and delayed treatment for patients.
The company's 3D ultrasound technology provides a supplemental imaging method engineered to enhance visualization through dense anatomical structures. By delivering detailed cross-sectional views, the system allows medical professionals to identify suspicious masses that might otherwise go undetected during routine mammography.
BeSound was established by chief executive Bailey Renger following a personal cancer scare at age 21. Experiencing structural hurdles within the current screening framework prompted Renger to develop a lower-cost alternative to expensive hospital-based imaging and secondary diagnostic procedures.
Dense breast tissue is present in roughly half of women undergoing regular screenings. While regulatory guidelines increasingly mandate that healthcare facilities inform patients of their breast density, access to affordable follow-up imaging has remained limited due to high out-of-pocket costs and inconsistent insurance coverage.
BeSound plans to roll out its technology to outpatient centers and specialized clinics nationwide to improve screening availability and streamline diagnostic pathways for high-risk individuals.
