Automated Hair-Braiding Device Aims to Cut Salon Visit Times by 80 Percent
A newly developed robotic device designed by a Harvard engineer aims to automate hair braiding and significantly reduce appointment durations for salon clients.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A newly developed automated hair-braiding device aims to dramatically reduce salon appointment times, promising to cut down styling sessions by up to 80 percent. The technology, known as HaloBraid, was created by a Harvard University engineer seeking to modernize the labor-intensive process of protective hair styling.
The inventor conceived the robotic concept after spending four days manually braiding her own hair. Recognizing the physical strain and extended time commitment required for traditional braiding, the engineer developed a mechanical system designed to automate key portions of the process while assisting professional stylists.
Protective hairstyles such as braids routinely require between four to ten hours to complete manually, depending on the length and complexity of the requested pattern. By automating the mechanical braiding process, the device allows stylists to complete appointments in significantly shorter timeframes, potentially transforming salon throughput.
In addition to reducing appointment durations for clients, the device is engineered to decrease ergonomic fatigue for hair technicians. Repetitive strain injuries remain a frequent concern among professional braiders due to the prolonged, precise hand movements involved in traditional application techniques.
The technology is currently undergoing further refinement as developers prepare for broader testing and commercial deployment. Details regarding market release timelines and pricing structures for professional salon operators have not yet been announced.
