CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple Inc. has officially updated its digital navigation application to label Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for users located within the United States. The move aligns the technology company's cartographic data with a similar modification recently executed by search giant Google.

The geographic revision stems from a federal executive order signed by President Donald Trump amid a heightened trade dispute between the United States and Canada. The administrative directive instructed federal agencies to update official documentation, leading to an alteration in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, which serves as the primary national database for standardized place names.

The display of the altered name varies depending on the geographic location of the device accessing the mapping platform. The Canadian iteration of Apple Maps continues to show "Lake Ontario" when users view the region, while international versions of the application display both names concurrently to reflect differing national recognitions.

Implementation timelines differed between the major mapping providers. Google adjusted its digital cartography shortly after the official federal database registered the name change, whereas Apple waited longer before rolling out the update across its network.

This is not the first instance of digital map providers modifying international geographic markers due to legal or policy mandates. Both technology corporations have previously adjusted cartographic labels, including updates to regional waterways, to maintain compliance with domestic regulatory standards and executive directives.
