Apple Advances Touchscreen Mac Project in Shift from Legacy Strategy
Apple is developing touchscreen Mac computers, marking a strategic pivot away from long-standing internal design principles regarding laptop displays.

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple Inc. is developing touchscreen Mac computers, marking a significant strategic pivot for the technology company's personal computer line. Engineering teams are actively working on the project, which could see the first touchscreen MacBook Pro released as early as 2025.
The upcoming designs are expected to retain traditional laptop form factors, including a standard trackpad and keyboard, while integrating touch sensitivity directly into the display. The initiative represents a notable departure from the long-held product philosophy established under former Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, who publicly rejected touchscreens on desktop and laptop computers as ergonomically unsuitable.
Under current Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, Apple has increasingly aligned features across its mobile and desktop ecosystems. While the company previously maintained a strict divide between touch-based tablets and pointer-based laptop hardware, recent software updates have progressively brought shared applications and interface elements to both platforms.
The hardware adjustments come amid broader shifts in the global personal computer market, where competing manufacturers have offered touch-enabled laptops for over a decade. Display component suppliers are reportedly preparing organic light-emitting diode screens tailored for the upcoming Mac hardware.
Apple has not publicly announced official release timelines or finalized specifications for the touchscreen devices. The company continues to update its existing non-touch Mac portfolio alongside the internal development of the new display integration.
