Chipmaker AMD has agreed to acquire spatial AI startup World Labs in an $8.2 billion stock deal to expand its capabilities in physical artificial intelligence.
Semiconductor manufacturer AMD announced an agreement to acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence startup specializing in physical AI and world models, in an all-stock transaction valued at $8.2 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the year, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
Under the terms of the deal, World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su. World Labs’ workforce will join AMD as part of the transaction, merging its software research team directly into the chipmaker's enterprise operations.
Founded two years ago, World Labs focuses on building world models trained on video and three-dimensional visual data rather than text-based datasets. The technology is designed to enable artificial intelligence to comprehend physical environments, spatial relationships, and object dynamics, which developers consider essential for powering autonomous machines such as robotics and self-driving vehicles.
The deal formalizes a technical partnership initiated between the two companies last year, which centered on optimizing AI model training and inference performance on AMD graphics processing units. The acquisition aims to strengthen AMD's hardware and software portfolio as competition intensifies among semiconductor manufacturers expanding into spatial computing and physical AI.
AMD shares were roughly flat in extended trading following the announcement. Further details regarding employee headcount and operational changes were not immediately disclosed.
