Amazon to Expand Drone Delivery Operations to Five New Cities by 2026

Amazon announced plans to scale its Prime Air drone delivery service, projecting a sixfold increase in operational capacity across select markets by 2026.

Amazon is preparing to expand its Prime Air drone delivery network into five additional U.S. metropolitan regions by 2026 as part of a major logistical scaling effort. The company projects that the rollout will result in a sixfold increase in its total drone delivery capacity compared to current operational levels.

The initiative aims to enhance rapid fulfillment capabilities for small, lightweight items. Under the updated strategy, specialized drone launch facilities will be integrated into existing delivery stations to streamline automated sorting, loading, and flight dispatch procedures.

The expanded deployment relies on ongoing compliance with Federal Aviation Administration standards and local airspace authorizations. Federal regulators continue to oversee safety protocols for commercial drones operating beyond the visual line of sight of remote pilots in populated areas.

Participating customers located within designated service zones will be able to select drone delivery for eligible merchandise weighing up to five pounds. The autonomous aircraft are designed to transport orders from distribution centers to residential drop locations within 60 minutes.

The automated aircraft utilize onboard sensors and navigation software to detect obstacles during flight and safely drop packages onto designated landing zones. The technology is built to operate under standard daylight weather conditions.

Specific city listings and exact neighborhood coverage maps for the five new target areas will be released in phases as site construction and regulatory clearances are finalized over the coming months.
